Let’s get started

Okay, before you get started making your adorable DIY bumble bee door hanger, you need to download and print my free bumble bee template! This bumblebee template is easy to print and perfect for making a bumblebee from foam board!

You can have my free bumble bee printable template emailed to you here

Alright, now that you have the template printed go ahead and cut it out. Then, place the template onto the foam board and trace around the template on the foam board.

Cut the shapes out of the foam board, and you will have your bumble bee’s body, head, and two wings. Next is the fun part! You get to paint your bumble bee!

I chose to do a traditional bee and painted mine black and yellow, but you can get as creative as you want with yours! For paint, I used Apple Barrel Black Acrylic Paint, Apple Barrel White Acrylic Paint, and Apple Barrel Yellow Acrylic Paint.

I painted the head of my bumblebee black, placed a ruler to get a clean line between the head and the body, then painted the body all yellow. Allow your paint to dry before you continue if you plan to do black and yellow stripes as I did.

Add the details to your DIY bumble bee door hanger

Once the yellow painted body was dry, I used a ruler to draw lines horizontally across the bee’s body that were evenly spaced. These are the guides for the black stripes I’m going to paint next.

I left a thin yellow stripe between the head and the top black stripe on the bee’s body. Then, I used an artist’s brush to precisely paint the edges of the black stripes and then painted the middle of each stripe.

Bring it all together

Again, make sure your paint is completely dry before you continue. I used my heat gun to speed up the drying process. If you don’t have a heat gun, you can use a hairdryer on the low cool setting.

Hot glue your bee’s wings onto its body, just beneath its head. I painted stitch-like lines around the edges of the bumble bee’s head.

Next, I painted longer stitch-like lines around the edges of the bumble bee’s wings with black paint and small stitch-like lines around the edge of the bee’s body. That’s all the painting you have to do for this DIY bumble bee door hanger with a free template.

Now you need to make a bow. I used a bow maker and yellow and white striped ribbon for my bow. I secured the center of my bow with a black zip tie and covered it with a small piece of black buffalo check ribbon that I hot glued in place.

The finishing touches

Hot glue the bow onto your foam board bumble bee between the two wings and just beneath the thin yellow stripe. Once the bow was on the bee, I trimmed its tails.

Next, hot glue two black pipe cleaners to the back of the bee’s head and curl their tops. I hot glued a price of ribbon over the bottom of the pipe cleaners to hold them in place better.

Finally, hot glue a piece of jute twine between the bee’s pipe cleaner antennae, and you’re ready to hang this adorable bee on your front door!
