How to Make a Rustic Valentine’s Love Sign

I started this project by removing the stars from the front of my USA tag sign with a putty knife. Then, I untied the twine hanger from the tag sign and flip it over.

Paint an even coat of white paint on the back of the tag sign and allow it to dry completely. I like to use my heat gun to speed up the drying process.

Once the paint is dry, smooth out the surface with a sanding sponge. Then, I applied a coat of Mod Podge to the surface of the sign and placed the tissue paper onto the Mod Podge.

Cover the surface with a piece of plastic saran wrap and smooth out the tissue paper with a rolling pin. Let the Mod Podge dry then tear off the excess tissue paper from the sign.

How to stain wood with acrylic paint

Next up, I removed the metal arrow from the wooden heart. I had to use a screwdriver to unscrew the metal arrow from the wood.

I stained the wooden heart by pouring brown paint onto the wood and spreading it with a wet wipe. Make sure you also stain the edges of the heart.

Allow the paint to dry completely then distress the wooden heart with a piece of sand paper. If you don’t have a heat gun, you can use a hairdryer on the low-cool setting instead.

LOVE

Next I worked on the wooden LOVE heart ornament. I started by painting the entire ornament white, and I dried the paint with my heat gun.

Then, I painted the LOVE black. Once the black paint was dry, I painted two coats of red paint over the black paint. Allow that to dry, then paint over it with white paint.

I know that seems like a lot of extra steps, but once the white paint is dry, distress the LOVE with a piece of sand paper. You’ll get the black and red paint showing through the white paint.

How to make a bow

I used a few different ribbon patterns to make the bow for this adorable rustic Valentines LOVE sign. You can see exactly how I made my bow by watching the DIY tutorial on Facebook.

Skip ahead to the 1:25:00 mark in the video to see how I made my bow. Then, once the bow is made, it’s time to work on the half wood beads.

Put your half wood beads in a small mixing bowl and spray them with water. Pour brown paint into the bowl and swirl the beads around. Wipe each bead with a wet wipe and allow them to dry.

Bring it all together

Trace a circle onto your piece of cardboard and cut it out. Then, cut out a smaller circle in the center of the cardboard circle.

Paint the cardboard with the silver metallic paint, allow it to dry, then glue it over the hole at the top of the tag sign.

Glue the DIY bow just below the hole, the stained wooden heart below the bow, and half wood beads in a line below the wooden heart. Lightly brush a bit of red paint onto each wood bead.
