What you’ll need:

• Mermaid Suncatcher Outline
• Crushed Glass
• Craft Resin
• Transfer Tape
• Resin Mixing Kit
• Black Paint
• Sponge or Paintbrush
• Tweezers

Let’s get to the tutorial!

The first step to crafting any of my laser cut wood blank craft kits is to clean the surface. You can do this either by wiping the pieces with a baby wipe or by lightly sanding.

This is an essential step that removes any residue left from the laser cutting process and ensures an easier time staining and painting the wood.

The next step is actually optional depending on your preference, but I tend to prefer to paint my outline black. In my opinion, this helps the design really pop and brightens the colors.

Once you’re wooden mermaid suncatcher outline is prepped (or painted if you chose to), you’re ready to start the glass steps!

How to craft with crushed glass

Before you can craft with crushed glass, you have to choose which crushed glass you want. Lucky for you, we have a variety of colors and sizes available for you to choose from!

If you want to recreate the same mermaid suncatcher I made, you can get the crushed glass I used from my shop – Shop Amber’s Crushed Glass.

However, you can choose to fill the suncatcher outline with any crushed glass or shell you prefer.

Before you actually start pouring the crushed glass into the openings of the mermaid suncatcher outline, you need to firmly apply transfer tape to the backside of the outline.

I like to use my mixing spoon to really press the tape onto the wood to ensure there will be no gaps allowing the resin to leak out later.

Now this next step sounds simple, but you need to be focused!

Once you choose your glass colors, and you know where you want them to go, carefully pour the crushed glass into the openings of the suncatcher.

I recommend doing this slowly with just a little glass at a time. If glass spills out of the opening where you want the color to be, you can use tweezers to pick up and the small pieces.

There’s no rule on how much glass you have to add to each section. You can even leave sections completely empty or fill with only resin. These DIY suncatcher outlines are full of customizable opportunities!

Crafting with resin for beginners

Creating faux stained glass with resin is so simple, as long as you take your time. First, mix your resin following the instructions.

Now, carefully pour the resin over the glass using the mixing stick to spread it evenly in each gap and remove air bubbles. You can also use the handle of a paintbrush to pop any air bubbles in the resin.

This is the most important step – leave it alone. Once you are satisfied with the coverage of the resin and have removed as many bubbles as you can, walk away from your craft station.

Let the suncatcher to sit for 12-24 hours (see your resin to know specifically how to cure it) until the resin is completely hardened.

Once the resin is solid and firm, gently peel the transfer tape from the back, and just like that you have an incredible diy faux stained glass mermaid suncatcher!
