How to Make Valentine’s Day DIY Potted Gnomes

The first step of making these adorable Valentine’s Day DIY Potted Gnomes is to decorate and assemble the gnome kits.

Valentine's Day DIY Potted Gnomes

My gnome kit comes with two gnomes. One has a plain hat, and one gnome has little engraved hearts on its hat.

Valentine's Day DIY Potted Gnomes

I painted the plain hat with white paint and used my heat gun to quickly dry the paint. Then, I applied a coat of Mod Podge over the dry white paint.

I placed the ticking napkin onto the Mod Podged gnome’s hat. Make sure you separate the napkin plies before you place the napkin on the Mod Podge. This ensures a secure bond on the surface.

Once the Mod Podge was dry, I went around the edge of the gnome’s hat with a piece of sandpaper to tear off the excess napkin from the gnome.

Assemble your gnome kits

Then, I painted the little hearts that go on the gnome’s hat with red paint, and I painted the gnomes’ noses with Apple Barrel territorial beige acrylic paint.

I also painted the hat with engraved hearts red as well. Let all the paint dry, then glue the red hearts to the decoupaged hat and a red pom pom at the very tip of the hat.

Glue the painted noses onto each of the gnomes.

Then, I painted the engraved hearts on the other gnome’s hat with the puffy white paint. Allow all of the paint to dry, glue a white pom pom at the tip, then start unwinding the Dollar Tree cotton nautical cord.

You’re going to secure the strands of the cotton nautical cord on the bottom lip of the gnomes to create their beards! You can see exactly how I did that in the tutorial video.

Decorate your terra cotta pots

I used two different-sized terra cotta pots for my Valentine’s Day DIY potted gnomes, and I painted each of them with Apple Barrel Country Grey acrylic paint.

Then, I lightly brushed white paint over the dried country grey paint and smudged it out with a wet wipe. Let the paint dry completely, then glue the half wood beads around the top trim of the pots.

Bring it all together

Push the floral foam spheres into each of the painted terra cotta pots. Then, paint one wooden dowel white and one red, and let the paint dry completely.

Once the wooden dowels are painted and the paint is dry, push one into each of the painted terra cotta pots. Push Spanish moss over the wooden dowels and cover the foam in each pot.

Lastly, glue the Valentine’s Day gnomes at the top of each of the wooden dowels!
