Scenic DIY Suncatcher -Faux Stained Glass Techniques

I hear it all the time – “I want to try the suncatchers but mine wouldn’t look that good!” and I get it. But with this Scenic DIY Suncatcher, I’m going to show you my faux stained glass techniques that just don’t fail!

I understand that traditional stained glass techniques are delicate and can be very intimidating. That’s what makes my suncatcher outlines the best – you literally stick, fill, and pour! Seriously, that’s it!

Let me tell you a bit about us. First, my name is Amber Strong, and I started a business many years ago selling pallet scrap furniture I built in my garage.

Over the years, it has evolved into a 5000 sqft warehouse with a team of 10+ including my husband and myself!

We specialize in craft kit manufacturing (like this scenic diy suncatcher outline) and have expanded into crushed glass, resin, and graphic tees!

Watch the tutorial

I craft these diy tutorials on live videos typically through Facebook, but sometimes I double stream them to Youtube as well.

Once we finish the live craft, I save the video and upload it to Youtube so it doesn’t get lost. These tutorials, even though they’re the replay video, are still full of so much good information and instructions.

Let’s get started

You start with the blank suncatcher outline. With any of our kits, we always recommend you prep the surface first, especially if you’re planning on painting or staining.

Prep the scenic landscape diy suncatcher outline by either wiping the surface with a baby wipe or by lightly sanding the surface.

You simply want to remove the thin layer of residue form the laser cutting process.

Stain the outline

This next step is optional, but I typically like to paint the outline with black paint before I start the faux stained glass process.

Painting the outline black helps the colorful glass look more vibrant, in my opinion, but it is not necessary.

Allow the paint to dry completely (if you choose to), then adhere the transfer tape to the entire backside of the outline.

I use the wooden stick for my resin to press and slide across the transfer tape and really secure it in place. This makes leaks a lot less likely.

Crushed Glass Art

This is where the creativity really starts! You have to pick your glass colors. You can watch the tutorial video on. Youtube to see exactly what colors I chose, but really the combinations are endless!

Slowly pour the glass into each section of the scenic landscape diy suncatcher. If any of the pieces fall or bounce into the wrong spot, use a pair of tweezers to pick them up. The glass can be sharp and cut you, so please be careful.

Resin Pour

Now, mix your resin by carefully following the packagings instructions. Slowly pour the prepared resin into each section. Use your mixing brush or the handle of a paintbrush to spread and smooth the resin.

Pop any bubbles you see as you’re pouring the resin in. This last step is dependent on what resin you use, but it’s time to cure the resin. Typically, its 12-24 hours to allow the resin to fully harden.

Slowly pull the transfer tape off AFTER the resin is fully cured, and admire your incredible Scenic DIY Suncatcher made with easy Faux Stained Glass Techniques!
