Dollar Tree DIY Mixed Media Art

I think sometimes we see a DIY project that we want to try, but we convince ourselves that it is too hard. In my opinion, this Dollar Tree DIY Mixed Media Art is one of those projects for my followers.

A lot of people think you have to have a significant experience with DIY skills to make this project, but it is really quite simple! That’s why I chose to share how to make this adorable DIY mixed media art with you!

We are going to start this adorable DIY by decoupaging our scrapbook paper to the Dollar Tre dovetail sign.

To do this, first cut the scrapbook paper to the shape and size of your Dollar Tree sign. Then, apply a coat of Mod Podge directly to the surface of your sign.

Now, carefully place the scrapbook paper onto the sign. You want to avoid creating any wrinkles or creases.

If any form, you can lay a piece of plastic saran wrap over the paper and use a rolling pin to smooth out the imperfections.

Next, I added my stencil design. Instead of using paint, I used spackling to give this piece the texture that it needs! So, place your stencil. I didn’t use an adhesive stencil but instead used tape to secure a plastic stencil over the top right corner of the sign.

Then, I used a putty knife to spread the spackling over the stencil and get the design onto the scrapbook paper.

Make your own stamp

For this next part of the mixed media decor, I used a piece of cardboard to make my own stamp! If you pull the paper off the cardboard, you’ll be able to see the corrugated inside.

Then, you can wrinkle the cardboard, cut the edges, or do whatever you want to add texture to your stamp.

Next, I applied Dixie Belle Fluff Chalk Paint directly to the cardboard and pressed it down onto the bottom left corner of the sign. I then kept stamping the cardboard randomly across the sign.

I had a cute chicken wire sticker that I wanted to use almost like a stencil for this project. So, I cut a triangular piece of the chicken wire sticker and placed it in the bottom right corner of the sign.

Then, I covered the bottom right corner with spackling and pull the chicken wire sticker off the sign.

I continued to do this randomly across the sign to add more texture and detail to the sign. Once all the spackling is dry, we are going to add some color, so don’t worry!

Add a doily

Next, I used Mod Podge to attach half of a white doily to the bottom right side of the sign. This just adds more texture and dimension to the project.

I attached the other half of the white doily to the top left side of the mixed media sign, again with Mod Podge.

Once the Mod Podge had dried on both of the doily halves, I used a sanding sponge to sand the edges of the sign and remove the excess of the doilies.

Paint your house

You can set the Dollar Tree dovetail sign to the side for right now. We are going to work on decorating the wooden heart next.

The first thing I did was paint the wooden heart with Dixie Belle’s Fluff Chalk Paint. Next, I dabbed some Dixie Belle In The Navy Chalk Paint with an artist’s brush across the roof of the house.

Once the paint was dry, I applied Mod Podge to the roof of the house and placed half of a white doily onto the Mod Podge. I continued to layer doilies over each other on the roof of this wooden house.

After a couple of layers of the doilies, I dabbed the navy paint across the roof again to make sure we could see it peeking through the doilies.

Then, I just lightly brushed a bit of the navy paint onto the door of the house.

Paint the sign

Next, I used a large chippy paintbrush to lightly brush the navy paint onto the Dollar Tree sign. I went in different directions and kept a light hand.

I then dipped the same paintbrush in a bit of white paint and went back over the sign. Finally, I added navy paint to my DIY cardboard stamp and stamped it across the sign.

You’re going to start seeing all the texture now!

Add some more detail

Once I was happy with the stamping and painting of the sign, I attached some doilies to the very top of the sign with Mod Podge. I layered them over each other and almost made it look like curtains.

Lastly, I attached a bit of greenery to the side of the house. I just put some hot glue right next to the house and used a pair of tweezers to place the greenery and press it into the hot glue.
