How to Make a DIY Decorative Apple Cider Cart

I started by spray painting the lids of the plastic jars then I set them to the side to dry. Then, I mixed a bit of petroleum jelly with Apple Barrel Burnt Umber acrylic paint.

I painted the mixture onto the Dollar Tree wooden crate and used a dry, clean paper towel to wipe off the excess from the crate’s surface.

Next, I painted the wood crate with Waverly white chalk paint. Once the white paint was dry (I dried each side with my heat gun as I painted them), sand the surface lightly with a sanding sponge.

Then, I lightly painted a small amount of the petroleum jelly/brown paint mixture over the white paint and wiped off the excess with a paper towel.

This creates the perfect aged look for your DIY decorative apple cider cart! Repeat the process on the small wooden hammer.

Next, I added the words to the side of the wood crate with my alphabet stamps from Michael’s. I went with “apple cider”, hence the title DIY decorative apple cider cart, but you can go with whatever saying you prefer!

Bring it all together!

Now it’s time to get all the other pieces of the apple cider cart together! I cut the cardboard to be slightly larger than the size of the wooden crate.

Decide how tall you want the roof to be on the cart, then cut four wood craft dowels to the same size. Cut a rectangle out of the cookie tin that is the same size as your cardboard piece and hot glue them together.

Then, I hot glued the jute twine around the edge of the cardboard/cookie tin rectangle. I painted the top of the cookie tin with Foklart Java chalk paint, then mixed in a bit of yellow and red paint.

I went over the top with some grey paint and a little more yellow, then dried all the paint. Next, I brushed on the paint/petroleum jelly mixture on each of the wood dowel pieces and each button.

The finishing touches!

Hot glue the spray-painted jar lids onto the apple cider cart as its wheels. Then, hot glue the wood dowels inside the craft at each corner and hot glue the roof to the top of the dowels.

Put the wood hammer through the handle hole on one side of the crate and hot glue it in place at an angle. This is your apple cider cart’s handle!

Fill the inside of your cart with the Dollar Tree excelsior and place the mini apples in the cart. Lastly, paint white rims on each of the buttons and hot glue them in the center of each of the jar lids!
