DIY House and Home Sign

Black and white home decor is so classic, you really just can’t go wrong with it. Not to mention, I absolutely love using buffalo check in my DIY home decor projects. Maybe that’s why I love this DIY House and Home Sign so much.

How to make DIY House and Home Sign

Remove the twine hanger from the Dollar Tree chalkboard sign. Then, cut the buffalo check scrapbook paper 6 square from the edge. I only used the thin strip of paper to go across the top of the sign.

Before I attached the strip of the buffalo check paper to the sign, I trimmed the paper down to 5 squares tall and trimmed the top corners to be rounded. Next, I cut the shiplap scrapbook paper to fit the width of the Dollar Tree chalkboard sign.

Once you have both pieces of scrapbook paper ready to go, apply a coat of Mod Podge to the surface of the sign, and carefully place the pieces of scrapbook paper. You want to avoid creating any wrinkles or creases.

If they do form, you can cover the surface with a piece of plastic saran wrap and use a rolling pin to smooth out the imperfections. Then, allow the Mod Podge to dry. I used my heat gun to speed up the drying process.

Set the sign to the side for now and grab your wooden house. I painted my wooden house black with Apple Barrel Black Acrylic Paint, but you can use any color or paint brand that you prefer.

Make your house a home

Make sure you paint the edges of the house as well. I used an artist’s brush to paint the inside of the windows and crevices of the wooden house. Then, I painted each of the wooden letters black as well.

I chose to spell HOME, but just like with all my DIY projects, feel free to customize and personalize it however you want to! Get creative! I just want to be a source of inspiration for you!

Next, you need to get your half wood beads and paint them to match your decor. I painted mine black to match my project. Allow the half wood beads to dry completely before you attach them to your project. You don’t want to risk getting the paint on your scrapbook paper!

Bring it all together

I dry placed the painted wooden house, HOME letters, and half wood beads to make sure I liked where I was going to place them before I glued them in place. I thought about putting half wood beads across the top of the sign, but I went with the greenery ribbon instead.

Once I was happy with where I was going to place each part, I went ahead and started hot gluing them in place. I started with the house on the left side of the sign, then the wood beads across the bottom, and then the HOME letters vertically next to the house.

Next, I made a little wreath out of the greenery ribbon to go on the roof of the painted house, and I made a little bow from white jute twine that I hot glued to the top center of the mini wreath.

Lastly, I hot glued a strip of the greenery ribbon across the top of the sign, in the center of the buffalo check scrapbook paper strip, and used a white paint marker to add dots around the edge of the painted house!

The only thing left to do was add the paint sticks to the top of the back of the sign so that I could hang it up!
